I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I offer individual, couples and family counselling in my private practice in downtown Bolton, Ontario.
Like many in this field this is a second or third career for me. My original training is in nursing, followed by academic theology. I qualified as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1992, and completed my PhD in Theology at Edinburgh University in Scotland in 2002. I have subsequently worked in health care, first as an RN and then as a counsellor and psychotherapist for over 25 years - in schools, churches, crisis centers, EAP companies, and in private practice; I have worked in 3 different continents, including, Asia: India, Africa: Uganda, the UK, and now in Canada. I am a ‘third culture kid’ having been born in the East, and raised with one foot in the West, and have now made my home here in Bolton, Canada. I have experienced separation, loss, and death; made as many bad decisions as good, and enjoyed many of the joys, as well as the sorrows of life.
PRIORITIZING A ‘GOOD FIT’
I am trained, and now practice, as a psychotherapist, and yet I believe that one of the most significant gifts I bring to the therapy room is simply myself – my warmth, my compassion, and my ability to understand what you’ve been through - because I’ve been through something a bit like that before; my ability to understand the feelings and emotions you are experiencing - because I too have felt something a little like that before. My capacity to extend compassion and empathy is shaped by my own experience of suffering and pain. My capacity to come along side you, and to understand what you are going through, is deepened by my own experiences that may, in some small way, echo those of your own. While everyone’s experience of life is so incredibly unique, my ‘big-life’ experience may just give me a small window into what it is you are going through.
The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association describes counselling as, ‘the skilled and principled use of relationship to facilitate self-knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth, and the optimal development of personal resources.’ I believe that the most important aspect of any counselling experience is the relationship between the therapist and the client. Many clients describe it as ‘finding a good fit’. There are many therapists to choose from – take time to choose one is both well-qualified, and ‘a good fit.’
My education and experience include extensive training in counseling and psychotherapy, both as a nurse and while working in academic theology. I also have completed post-graduate training in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), and Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE), from the University of Toronto, as well as additional training in Marriage and Family Counselling from the University of Guelph. I have specialized training in a wide range of different therapeutic approaches, such as CBT, DBT, and narrative. I have completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with both Les Greenberg (York University) and Sue Johnson (Ottawa). I am currently working toward certification as an EFT therapist with Les Greenberg. Emotionally Focused theory and practice inform my work with individuals, couples and families. I have also completed additional training in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), developed by Dan Hughes; this greatly influences my work with chidren (10 yr up)/teens and families.
TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT
I offer in-person counselling in my Bolton office. Alternatively, I offer telephone and online counselling for those who need that flexibility. You can contact me directly to discuss this, or book an appointment on line and indicate that you would like to speak to me on the phone or on line. In special circumstances I can arrange to visit you in your home. I also offer a free telephone consult, or a free 30 minutes session in my office, if you would like to explore whether I might be a good fit for you.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions or concerns you have. I look forward to meeting you, and working with you.
