Success Story
I had a client with a diagnosis of manic depressive disorder. He struggled consistently with the idea of being taken care of by his younger sister. He had a strong desire to be the protector and provider for his family. With time we discovered that the client had come to associate caregiving with coercion, control and threat (given how he was forcefully admitted to a facility against his will during what his family referred to as a manic episode. In our work together we were able to deconstruct some of his misconceptions around care, which he now associates with qualities like tenderness, warmth and compassion.
