After working in Toronto with at-risk youth, I worked at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in the Substance Use and Concurrent Disorders Program for more than 7 years. Then I returned to school to complete my Masters in Educational Counselling at the University of Ottawa. Following this, I worked as an Associate at The Men’s Project as a group therapist for male survivors of childhood trauma. I also saw individual clients suffering with various issues. At the same time, I worked at the University of Ottawa Counselling Services and began work in private practice as a group and individual Psychotherapist.
With consideration of my growing family and the retirement of a well-loved colleague in my practice, it became necessary to focus my energies on work in one location. I opened a new practice in 2009. Since that time, I have worked as a Psychotherapist for 1:1 clients, as well as run group therapy for clients in recovery from addiction and disordered eating. With an interest to training and working with couples, I added this work to my practice in 2010.
My areas of expertise include: adult survivors of childhood trauma; PTSD; and extensive experience with compulsive or addictive behaviour such as substance, sex and disordered eating. I also see clients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and for difficulties with anger management, relationship issues, and separation/divorce difficulties.
Generally, I work collaboratively with my clients and am eclectic in my approach. I prefer the needs of my clients to guide me to the most appropriate and beneficial methods used. I have a background in emotion-focused work, schema therapy, attachment-related therapy and other modes of practice. I employ these methods to help my clients uncover patterns in the way they operate that are no longer helpful to them. Much of my work is relational, meaning a use of a mutually respected alliance between client and Psychotherapist. We explore alternatives in which the client can achieve lasting emotional and mental health in relation to the self and all areas of life.
