Mr. Rui Tian is a Registered Member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a Clinical Member of Ontario Society of Psychotherapists specialized in mental health and addictions. Mr. Tian is also a formal Executive Board Member (Treasurer 2011-2013) and Board Member (Chair of Professional Development 2013-2015) of Ontario Society of Psychotherapists.
Trained as a Psychotherapist, Addiction and Mental Health Therapist, a Professional Coach and certified as a Solution-Focused Therapist, Mr. Tian has been practicing in various clinical settings, including the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH), Addiction Service for York Region (ASYR), Blue Hills Child and Family Centre, and currently Griffin Centre and in his private practice. His clinical practices focus on assessment, diagnose, and treatment of addictions and mental health, developmental disorders and dual diagnosis —individual, couple, family, and group therapies; case management; aftercare, service coordination, as well as community treatment referrals. He has also been involved with major local Employment Assistance Program (EAP), WSIB, and insurance companies providing brief assessment, consultation, counselling, coaching, and referral services to individuals and families who are struggling with mental health issues, couple and familial relationships, parenting, developmental disorders, injuries, traumas, and chronic illnesses.
Mr. Tian conducts his practices with Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Family Systems Therapy, integrated with but not limited to elements from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative, Gestalt, Emotional-Focused Therapy (EFT), Trauma-focused Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT); Motivational Interview (stages of change), Harm Reduction, and Relapse Prevention. Mr. Tian interests in positive psychology, mindfulness, mental health coaching and client-centred, strength-based, and outcome-informed clinical approaches.
Through his clinical trainings and practices, Mr. Tian has accumulated with more than 15 years of experiences and expertise working with clients with addictions and mental health challenges. Frequently Mr. Tian works with clients on issues related to couple/family, parenting, personal wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, work related stress, cultural adjustment, sex identities/transsexuality, crisis, developmental disabilities, history of trauma, loss and grief, chronic illness, injuries, serious legal issues, and motor vehicle accident as well. He has been counselling his clients and their family members on adverse mental and/or physical conditions, relational challenges, stresses, pain and chronic conditions through psychotherapy, coaching, finding resources; navigating the systems, and collaborating with community services.
Mr. Tian has been in private practice for the past 10 years providing psychotherapy, rehabilitation therapy, health coaching, and consultation to individual clients, families, and organizations. His clients are from all walks of life, with various sexual orientations, and from diverse social/cultural backgrounds and age groups.
